Tuesday’s Struggle

Jan 10

Yesterday was a bit of a struggle. I woke up hungry and pretty much stayed hungry all day. It's such a primal thing, hunger.  I think it was a direct result of the 3 hour fatbikeride in the snow the day before and my hour and 15 min trainer ride this morning. I burned almost 700 calories but was feeling ill (think I had a cold or something).

We are built to ensure we are fed, that’s how appetite and hunger is supposed to work, and I used that as justification to “feed”.  So… feed I did.   I went over my maintenance calories by ~900 calories by the end of the day. But, I tracked it and ate healthy.  I ate extra popcorn, protein bars, pea crisps, yogurt, riced cauliflower etc.  I had 2 big salads!  I am up a bit over a pound this morning (187.6 after a cup of coffee and some ‘business time”) and feeling a bit better.  What did I learn from this?

  1. I am not immune to the power of ghrelin.  Even though I know what is going on, I still did not use all the tools at my disposal to curb the hunger as well as I could.

  2. I did exercise some control by tracking everything and weighing myself this this morning.  I am resilient!

  3. THESE DAYS WILL HAPPEN!  The key to long term success is working through them, learning from them and having more good days then bad.

I did register for my favorite race yesterday, The Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival 40. This is a race from Hayward to Cable Wisconsin and I have been doin it (either the 40 or 16 race) off and on since 1990 … more off through most of the 2000s and 2010s. I wore the hat I bought in 1990 for good luck when I registered :)

Back at it today!  Finish stronger!
